- "I have two kids. My oldest is starting 6th grade and thankfully she prefers to stay in and read books as oppose to stirring up trouble on the playgrounds. Less worrying for me I suppose! Well I ran across this wonderful book called Ancient Thunder. How did I run across it? I found it in my daughters room. Apparently it was one of the books she received as a gift from my sister. Now Ancient Thunder is a picture book written and illustrated by Leo Yerxa. A little background on Mr. Yerxa, show's that he's an artist of Ojibwa ancestry. This book is wonderful. It's a tribute to wild horses. The illustrations are breath taking and stories behind it are just enough to give you some background on the illustrations. I found this book beautiful and inspiring and I believe it's a great book for children still in their intermediate and middle school ages to really enjoy and appreciate. I know I liked it for someone in their 40's so I'm going to say there's really no age restriction for how much you can truly enjoy this book, Ancient Thunder is going on our bookshelves."
- "It's a poem about horses, and how they relate to Native Americans. It's very metaphorical, and kind of spiritual. Beating the earth drum. The art is all photographs of painted watercolor paper treated to look like leather. So it looks like pictures of clothing that's been painted, which is a really strange thing. It's pretty. It's very stylized, probably intended to be in a specific Native American style. The artist is a descendant of Native Americans. Not particularly interesting. If your kid likes horses, it'd be good. ""Short, beautifully-illustrated, and worthwhile. Yerxa celebrates man's relationship with the horse. (Whether the poem/song that comprises the book's text is Yerxa's own creation or a traditional Ojibway song I couldn't tell.) And what else do you really need to know? "
- "This book is very cool. The illustrations are mind blowing. And who doesn't love horses? It gives a neat perspective from a different culture on horses. I must knock the content of the book a little bit as I feel it lends itself more towards children in the 3-6 year old range rather than 9-10 year olds. "
