"This is a cool book. The story and its characters are both so eccentric and intriguing, its a lot of fun to imagine what life would have been like through the family's eyes, in their bizarre pseudo-realistic world. However, it is a very, very long book, and it took me a very long time to get through. I felt frustrated at times because of this, but nonetheless, Oates writes beautifully, and this story is too interesting to miss."
"I just couldn't get into this book. The wide variety of characters and the complicated timeline was very difficult for me to keep straight. I didn't hesitate to buy it because it has all of the elements that I usually love in a book and it had so much praise. Sadly, I didn't even make it past the third chapter. I won't return it though, I'm sure I can find a friend who will give it some love."
"Written by famous arthur Joyce Carol Oates in 1983, the is a gothic novel about a upper class family in upstate New York. She incorporates magical elements with the reality of this family living together on a large estate. It's interesting at times but other times is hard to get through."
