"I know that it seems odd to rate "best young adult novels set in psychiatric hospitals" but given how serious of a topic this is for our young people today, I will tell you that this book, "Impulse" is one of the best and most honest books about suicide and self-hurting. I would definitely recommend that any young adults read this book in conjunction with an adult as there are some very moving moments where it helps to be able to release that emotion and to discuss the motivations and reasons as to why each of these teenagers attempted suicide. I give this book a rating of a "5" as it is a serious and important topic that definitely requires greater visibility and awareness."

"Ellen Hopkins is a good author and I've recommended her work before. This book takes some patience because of the narrative style (three different teens are telling their stories). You need to know that it's a somewhat hard read, these are folks who have tried to kill themselves. But substance abuse and addiction is hard to read. I've used this teaching a class of social work students (well, parts of it) so that they can get a feel for what post inpatient experiences are like. "

"Impulse is an inspiring story about self-injury and healing from it. It really puts things in perspective."

"I'm always looking for young adult novels that deal with the themes of violence and abuse. However, the story Impulse treats these themes as meaningless and provides no time in addressing these central concepts. Because this story only mentions these themes in passing, this novel is completely childish. "

"This looks very interesting. I think the plot and the reviews make this a good suggestion."

"Ellen Hopkins writes great novels and this one is no exception. The unique writing style pulls you in and helps you feel the chaos of the characters and their stories. I'd suggest this book to teens and adults."

"This book is a cheesy love story based in a mental hospital. It doesn't really give an accurate portrayal of what it's like and it's a very typical YA teen love story. Not my first choice. "
