After purchasing this text I've been able to easily keep track of everything in the story thanks to the flawless translation and study tid bits contained in this book. I can't recommend it enough!"

"I have been looking for a book I can read with my young adult children. We tried reading Les Misérables together but it was a complete failure. The book is just a bit to heavy for reading with young adults. Maybe we will try again in a few years."

"This book is somewhat scary, the scope and depth of the story is unbelievable. It's probably one of the longest and hardest to read books you've ever picked up. The novel’s overall message of the goodness and beauty of human nature is an appealing one."

"If you are on a an island and God hands you your last supper in the form of a Novel, you better pray that it is not Les Miserables. There is a reason that the word miserable rings out from it's name. The book is dated, hard to follow and the plot makes you cringe. You are better off trying to save your ship, but staring at an old coconut, waiting for water pour out. Victor Hugo may have been a star of his time, but not mine. "

"This novel is, as the title suggests, as relevant today as it was then or would have been before its publication. Social norms and morals sit side by side with injustice keeping man in an ever depressing state of misery and degradation. It might not be for you if you live in a fairy tale world where the world is a beautiful place and nothing bad happens."

"Les Miserables is a must read for anyone that wants to expand their reading material to foreign authors. The story about Jean Valjean's faith and love is one of the greatest journey's ever put into print. Very little of the story's depth and beauty is lost in translation. After reading Les Miserables it is easy to understand how this French novel had such a cultural impact across the world. I am very happy to have this book in my home library."

"This novel is one of the all time classics, and can be pretty confusing. I heard it was made into a movie a few years back, but something of this scope can't really be translated to the big screen."

"I had seen Les Miserables mentioned in other works for many years but never picked up a copy to read myself. After seeing it mentioned in the Bohemian Manifesto I finally decided to read it. I am sad that I waited so long to read this classic. I finally understand all the praise Les Miserables receives and why it continues to have a major cultural impact in world. Everyone should experience this book."

"A classic tale of strife and retribution that is emotionally heavy and will stay with you after you read it. Les Miserables has been made into a movie for a reason, it's characters have become cultural, social icons and the scenes are quoted for their strong impactfulness of sincerity."

"Les Miserables can probably considered among the best books with over 1000 pages. I don't think it can be called the best, because while it is a powerful story and it is told very well on stage and in movies, the book itself drags because it is over 1000 pages. But that's common for these longer books, but there are a few that buck that trend that I'd put as the very best."

"Before getting to the novel itself, one should be aware that this book has been translated from the original French many, many times since it was first published, and not all translations are equal. That said, the book is hefty, epic and absorbing. The characters come to life in and the setting of 19th century France is rendered vividly. The range of emotions are large, and the best and worst of humanity are given full reign. "

"Victor Hugo’s crowning acheivement is simply amazing. Widely considered one of the best novels of the 19th century, the monumentally-epic LES MISERABLES chronicles the soul-changing journey of Jean Valjean. Through the telling of Valjean’s story, Hugo condemns predujice, unfairness, and wretchedness, while at the same time celebrating the potential and the acheivement of man. This emotionally-powerful story of Valjean, Javert, Fantine, and Cosette has the power to change your life. Hugo’s gift to humanity will always serve to remind us to keep our lives in perspective and to seek empathy for our fellow man."

Les Miserables is a timeless masterpiece. While it was a challenging and long read, it was certainly worth the effort for me.
