What the community says about The Fire Next Time
- "I think this book tells a really important story in today's society. The author does a great job of describing how the injustices facing Black Americans are prevalent from birth, and can affect a person's entire life. I think this book should be required reading in every high school."
- "The Fire Next Time is a must-read for all Black Americans, and in fact for all Americans, Firmly in the tradition of Black Existentialism created by DuBois, the two essays in this book examine the nature of racism in America, and its effect on the people subjected to it. Baldwin was ahead of his time when it came to the idea of default whiteness, and its effect on the consciousness of Black folk. The insights in this book are as true now as the were when it was written in 1963."
- "I recommend The Fire Next Time as the best book about African-Americans. I think The Fire Next Time is a great read and a document to reference in association with Black Lives Matter Movement. I love books that feature aspects and concepts that others consider absent. "
- "As someone who "grew up" around the world and in the presence of a rainbow of people and cultures and then became a teacher, this book broke my heart while making it whole. I wish in my wildest dreams that this book was mandatory reading for the world. It speaks to more than just for and to the black american community, it speaks to anyone and everyone who is ready to listen. Baldwin's insights and anecdotes provide a steady glow in the readers mind to be fanned with deep thinking and self reflection. He so perfectly captures my many of my own thoughts, feelings, and musings and elucidates them in ways I have never been able to. I wish I wish I wish I could have had the opportunity to meet this incredible man. The introductory letter from his uncle is proof that this beautifully gifting writing courses through the veins of the Baldwin family. I love this book (it is actually two shorter pieces quilted together and it's perfect).""This book is simply a classic. It belongs on any list of best literature (and books that should be read by everyone who went through school). I read this years ago, and it still resonates with me. However, it is a classic and it does take some attention - as well as interest in Baldwin's cultural perspective (that's my way of saying my daughter is not a big fan. She thought this was dated). Like all classics, it is both dated and essential. So, a great book. "
