"In "The Giver" you learn about the importance of what one individual can do. Jonas, a boy brought up in a shut-in community is determined to break free. We follow the struggle and what he overcomes in his great escape."

"If you let the fact that this is a children's series stop you from reading it, you will have made one of the greatest mistakes of your life. This quartet is and probably always will be my #1 go-to recommendation to anyone who asks me what they should read next. Most people have heard of The Giver, but few know that there are four books. They are all just as good (if not better?) than the first."

After finishing it I have to say it sounds like a description of paradise! Who wouldn't want to live in that society? Great story."

"I'm a middle school student and wanted a new book to read. I found The Giver, which is a must-read book for middle school students. It's by Lois Lowry and tells the tale of Jonas. Jonas lives in a structured society where everyone is given a role (thus, the title, The Giver). The role he is given changes his life. I don't want to spoil anything for people who haven't read it, but this book is an amazing read. Check it out if you love to read and want a very immersive and fascinating story."

"This book is the best representation of this category because of both science fiction and philosophy being in this book all through it. The story goes into morality and the main character has a big issue with it. This book is set in the future and I would personally recommend it."

I read this book to my young daughter because her school has yet to make the students read it and she said it's her favourite book of all time."

"This is an excellent book, one of the great dystopian novels. This book was the precursor of books like The Hunger Games and Divergent. It is rather on the short side, and be read in one sitting. I would not put this book at the top of female authors, like Austin or Wharton or Buck, but it is for sure worth a read, especially for those who prefer more modern literature."

"I loved this book! Even though it’s recommended for teens, I read it as an adult, and would recommend it to everyone. It is an engaging story that I couldn’t stop reading, and I ended up finishing it in a single day. I enjoyed Lois Lowry’s writing style. This would also make a great book club read, as the themes of government control and enforced conformity make for excellent discussion topics. This book is actually the first in a series, so make sure you have plenty of time to read before starting it. If you’re like me, you’ll likely want to plow through the whole series once you get started! "

"I purchased the book The Giver by Lois Lowry for my son. My son is in the eighth grade and this book is a requirement. After he started to read the book it did not seem to take him very long to get through the book. He said for the most part that this book was an easy read for him. I was worried about that part since he is Dyslectic and sometimes books are hard to read. He said he felt that is easy to understand and easy to follow along. I love the fact that he did not struggle with this book. "

This explores if every one is the same with no feelings, this is what the Utopia looks like when everyone is the dame until Jonas is rewarded with the ability to feel feelings. A wonderful story through and through"

The haunting story centers on twelve-year-old Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community."

"This is a classic in the young adult fiction category, and it kicked off the dystopian future sub-genre. One can see why. The character of Jonas is compelling, and we find it easy to root for him as he begins to see through the illusionary world the rest of the world seems to accept. This book deals with large, important social and philosophical issues through great story-telling and never beats the reader with the themes. A Newberry Medal winner and rightfully so. "

It's darkly moody and highly introspective and it doesn't really give any easy answers and that's really amazing when you think about it, compared to modern VA fiction it does not paint everything in black and white. ""As far as novels that you must read because you are in school and it’s assigned goes, this is probably one of the better ones. I remember when I was in school all the books we had to read were completely boring it truly is a wonder I love reading after the dreck I was exposed to! Jonas world is bleak and boring. Nobody sees color, everyone is taught to be painfully polite as they go about their lives volunteering at various places, discussing their dreams and feelings all the while being totally naïve to the things that they are missing. At least in the Hunger Games, the folks in District Twelve knew they had it bad… the people in Jonas’ community are like the proverbial frogs in the boiling pot. The Giver has provided quite a few topics of discussion for my son and I as I am sure it has provided for his class and I am sure it will continue to provide in the future." - JennlyT (Verified Purchase)"

I don't know if it's the nostalgia that draws me into it or if it's just an really good book. Don't let the movie scare you away from reading this; it didn't do it any justice. I think this is an excellent read for young people who are looking to get into more serious novels. "
