"The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials) has some of the best polar bear illustrations and interactions that I have read in a book to date. I really like how the book in particular goes into great detail talking about polar bears and what their life is like. I also found Lyra's adventures and backstory to be extremely interesting as well. "

"The Golden Compass is a great entry into the Philip Pullman's book trilogy-- His Dark Materials. I always enjoy fantasy novels that mixes our world with the imaginative world of the author. The magic presented in the books are very unique to me. I had delayed reading this series for a while due to finishing other series. Once I started reading The Golden Compass, I wish that I had started reading this series a long time ago."

"I don't get too excited when I read unless I've heard really good things about it. The Golden Compass got me really excited from everything I heard about it. It's about a girl who tries to find her missing friend. It's really good and you won't want to put it down. "
  • David Webb

"An amazing book in it's own right, and yes, magic does play a part, but to state that "schools of magic" is why it's the best in it's category is just silly. Read the book for being amazing, not for some trumped up category."

"Newsweek called it a Top 100 Book of All Time for good reason. Do yourself a favor and read the "His Dark Materials" series of which this is the first and arguably, the best."

"The "His Dark Materials" series is a classic of fantasy adventure for a reason. Pullman's trilogy is a must-read for any fan of classic, old-school fantasy fiction. I first read these books when I was in school, and I re-read them every few years just to relive it. A real classic!"

"My high school buddies have been suggesting this book to me so my expectations are quite high before I start reading the book. After finishing it, I can say that it's good but not as good as I was expecting. It seems to be part of a Christian lit."
  • Micaela Ordoñez

"As popular fantasy novels go, this one doesn't get much better, being lauded by the New York Times, Newsweek and the Washington Post. First in the Dark Materials trilogy, Pullman follows with The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass."
  • David Gardner

"An amazing trilogy that is dark, beautiful and thought provoking. This is the first book of the series and the audiobook is engrossing and very easy to listen to. Highly recommended. "

"I've always loved His Dark Materials. I would put The Golden Compass up there with Harry Potter on my list of books I couldn't put down as a kid. I have compared the story of this first book to being a cross between Harry Potter and The Odyssey. Lyra's journey to the "main event" takes up most of the content of the first entry in this series, and the journey is so, so fun."

"I concur that The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials) is the best book that every 13/14 year old should read. I like The Golden Compass and especially the unity between man and animals. I also enjoyed it because it was thought-provoking."

This book was a great introduction to the trilogy and I really enjoyed it. Her journey and the fantasy world that she is apart make this story unique and fun to read."

"I loved every chapter. I enjoyed reading about different worlds, daemons, armored bears, witches, spectors, mulefa, angels, Authority, and golden dust. I liked the names of fictional geographical regions being similar to the real names because it immediately created a general picture in my mind. I also greatly enjoyed the incorporation of elements of old and current religious beliefs, ancient myths, and even some science into the plot because it added the feeling of familiarity."

"This series seems to be written for a younger audience, and preteens can read it without any struggle. The trilogy begins with this book: The Golden Compass. The book provides fantasy and fictional geographical regions. There is a movie after the book, but I highly recommend the book first, as the movie is underwhelming. The story is great and it's one that isn't easily put down."

"The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials) is good, but not one of the best books that feature anthropomorphic animals. The story is dull and the characters are boring. It does have some good parts that really capture your interest."

" The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials) featured some atheism. In all, it was not my kind of book and I lost interest after the first 6 chapters. I cant tell you anymore about it, because I stopped reading it. "

"After watching the movie I decided to pick up this book and it is amazing. The richness and depth of the world and its characters is amazing. There are many worldly themes that adults would be able to easily pick up on, while also maintaining an appropriateness for younger teens. The plot is fast moving and intense and the storyline is dramatic and fascinating. The world Pullman creates is amazing. "

"My 12-year-old kid just read The Golden Compass and loved it! Based on her reaction, I would expect this to be one of the best books available for children in that age range. What was less expected was that, upon reading the book after my daughter, I loved the book as well! The plot is fairly advanced for a book that I had thought was geared more for tweens and teens. Fantastic read!"

"I see you're a Harry Potter fan huh. Like the books more than the movie? Yeah I too liked the books more than the movies. If you're looking for something new to read I can I suggest the "The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials)" Its has the mystery that the potter books had but also stays original with its own twists and tales thru a dark world full of magic. Try them out I think you might like them."

"The Golden COmpass is a very classic young adult trilogy that's been ready by many many people over the years. It's one of the more common books that people recommend and for good reason. SOme people feel it has overly christian overtones, but I feel like that's less of an issue than some people think."
