What the community says about The Haunting of Hill House
- "A very scary and chilling haunted house story. I'm a fan of this genre and have read several, and many fail to understand that it's about the suspense and the idea of fear, not about describing everything in details. Monsters are a lot scarier if you never see them. This book, while not a masterpiece, keeps the tension throughout and provides for plenty of scares and anxiety (in a good way). I would say any fans of the genre would do well to pick it up."
- "This quality presentation makes me feel like I'm in the story. Although it's a relatively short book, and can easily be read within a day or less, it is skillfully written."
- "This novel is hailed by many as one of the most frightening ghost hunting novels out there. While a bit dated, it follows a scholar hoping to find out for certain if a house is haunted, along with his assistant, another young lady, and a guy who should inherit the house, who is a character unto itself. "
- "I'd been meaning to read this classic horror novel for some time and I finally got around to it. I remember reading Shirley Jackson's The Lottery in middle school, and how chilling it was. The Haunting of Hill House is of the same quality. It isn't quite as scary today as when it first came out, I'm sure, but the quality of writing is great. The pacing was a bit slow, but this book inspired an entire genre, so you have to give it that!"
