What the community says about The Hunger Games
- "The first book in this series was one of the best action thrillers I’ve ever read. It was tight, heart-pounding, stressful, and the world seemed alive. The followup 2 books reveal the weakness of the premise (the Capitol’s actions don’t really make sense when you think about it; the Games serve to ensure that the 14-19 year old demographic, the people already most likely to rebel against authority, have a good reason & excuse to keep themselves in a constant state of combat readiness? Great idea!). Collins’ needs to jump through hoops twice to get the characters back in an “arena” setting, because she can’t make the action work outside of an arena, and she has a lot of trouble fleshing out characters who were fine as one-note action sequences but aren’t as appealing once you have to spend 15 pages listening to them talk. Overall, it’s a good set of books; I’d look forward to other work by this author; but the first one is the only one you should buy someone as a gift. "
- "Looking for some summer reading for your teen? Want to keep them engaged in the written work while school is out? This series of books will hook them from chapter one. My teen could not put them down once he started reading them. Set in a dystopian world where the main character Katniss needs to learn to survive under some extremely unique circumstances, the plot and characters fully engage the young adult reader. One note of caution, my son threw the last book across the room when he was done reading it as he was so involved in the story and didn't agree with the ending! (But he was completely engaged!) "
- "The extraordinary, ground breaking New York Times bestsellers The Hunger Games and Catching Fire, along with the third book in The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins, Mockingjay, are available for the first time ever in a beautiful boxset edition. Stunning, gripping, and powerful. The trilogy is now complete!"
- "Say what you will about dystopic fiction, but I love it. I devoured these faster than I went through Harry Potter, and I'm not even a kid! That doesn't matter; both kids and adults can agree that any story where a bunch of kids are killing each other at the behest of the adults is going to be awesome. We're wiser. We know what we're doing. Plus, it makes for profitable entertainment. Frankly, I'm surprised HBO hasn't created a reality show of this yet. Or bought the rights to the Japanese one! Mockingjay tapered out a bit, but all in all, this is one of those nice tight trilogies that you can't help but enjoy. Additionally, it's now a major motion picture!"
