"The Lord of the Rings is perhaps the quintessential tale of magic and is the origin of many of the hallmark creatures and mystics we know and love today. Chief among them is the wizard. There is no forgetting the striking figure of Gandalf the Grey, whose whimsy but dark depths added an enchanting nuance to the story like no mere mortal could have. All wizards we've known today, even the beloved Harry Potter (and his mentor who was clearly inspired by the long-bearded Gandalf) must tip their hats to the great grandfather found in this story. "

If you're looking for a great a page turner that comes in over 800 pages, look no further; Tolkien's work will keep you captivated for weeks (or days, depending on how fast you read). "The Lord of the Rings is a venerable classic of fantasy. But, it's a bit of a difficult read - Tolkien was not your modern, lean, thriller writer. This is a somewhat ponderous work, one filled with linguistics, music, lifestyle, philosophy, and other diversions. That's not to turn you away - I believe The Lord of the Ring's influence speaks for itself in that regard! But know that for modern readers of novels, this is almost a "study" more than a read."

"Lord of the Rings only partially satisfies the topic at hand. While it has fantasy elements that are adjacent to the concept of faeries, The Lord of the Rings contains little if any content about faeries themselves, and they certainly are not the focus of the novels. I enjoyed part of the story, but it was not what I was looking for."

"This is an absolute must classic an adventure for every age and type of person. If your heart doesn't jump out of your chest. If you don't cry at least once, you must go back and reread it. I read it several times. Yes, the first time the language was a bit of a stumper for me. But, I was so intrigued I had to give it another go and I finally got swimmingly along and devoured the whole tale. I know one young man that read it while in jail and credits it with helping him keep his spirits up. I have read that a young person in a coma had their friends reading it to him day and night. Everyone has a story about this story. Read it and get your own. "

"Excellent suggestion, especially with the explosion of the popularization of this book in cinema in the recent past, and since this is a classic novel. I would add that this is a good suggestion for adults, not children. However, since folks over 13 will most likely be accessing the site anyway, I think it's a great solution. I would add more options since "novels" in the plural is in the topic line. I appreciate the link to buy the book from a trusted site."

Fans of the films who have never read the novels need to read this to truly understand just how important this series is. You only begin to understand Tolkien's deeper meanings when you read this book and series. I read these once a year. If you have never read fantasy before, this is a great way to get your feet wet in the genre."

"This is the foundation of the fantasy genre for literature. There may very well be other books out there that preceded this in the genre, but this series established it on the map. This was the penultimate for those of us old guys and gals who grew up playing dungeons and dragons back when parents were freaking out, thinking it would screw us up for life and drive us crazy. This was really ultimate fantasy novel, and many people have probably seen the movies by now, which I am pleased have treated the series with the respect that us nostalgic old guys and gals have for this series. If you haven't read this novel because you're younger and only saw the movie, I believe it's worth a read. There are a lot of things in the novel that didn't make it to the movies, and the movie changed some things. I don't get upset about that, and consider film to be a different literary form, and so changes must be made of necessity to novels adapted to movies. Some hard core Tolkien fans were probably upset about it, but most of us love the films."

With that said, I do not believe that it is one of the best books for older teen boys. I am a firm believer that science fiction is not for everyone. I think you really enjoy it or you really dislike it. If your son, brother, friend, etc. is into science fiction, than The Lord of the Rings is a MUST, if they aren't into science fiction, STEER CLEAR. It will ruin his love for reading. "
