"This is one of the first books we read in my college philosophy course. It definitely opens up windows in the mind -- it has stood the test of time for a reason."

"I had to read this in college and thought I would give it another shot since it's been so long. I found it to be an amazing piece of history and human knowledge. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a greater understanding of the ancient Greeks. "

"The Republic is one of the most influential books in history. It is an international best seller for good reason. After reading it I was more knowledgeable of the Greek philosopher Plato. What is amazing, is the book was written around 380 BC."

"Well, now, I don't know. If this is a book you're planning to buy for your college freshman, to tuck into their suitcase - don't. Yes, it's an important book. Yes, they'll probably have to buy it. Yes, it's seminal. But, no, you shouldn't be the one to buy it for them. If you're that college wanna-be and you're headed to college, and a student of philosophy, history, politics, or even literature - and you want to get a head start, read this. It will help. It's not a page turner, but it's really important to understanding the foundations of Western Civilization. "

"Plato is a favorite in Philosophy classes but I don't think this work would work as a coffee table book... Obviously the ideas within are an important part of the thought-provoking Greek contribution to the world and should be read by everyone once they're mentally mature enough to discuss the ideas, but it's not something to read lightly with guests while sipping coffee."

"This is absolutely the best free e-book for young adults. It is a classic piece of philosophic writing that I think is an extremely beneficial thing for a person to read and put in their minds when they are still young. It isn't as popular as a lot of fluffy fiction, but I would highly recommend this to others myself."

""The Republic", a book fastened from the works of the Greek philosopher Plato, seems precariously out of place among the collection of literary works that inspired the TV show Black Sails. "The Republic" is all about ancient philosophical ideas whereas Black Sails is about pirates and their accompanying adventures. Plato's book is certainly a masterpiece and its influence cannot be denied, but it has no relevance to the adventures of pirates."

"The Republic is most certainly a classic, but it's not the best starting point for someone who is interested in philosophy. Sometime beginning at the beginning isn't the best course, and the Republic is really too dense and requires too much understanding of its context for a beginner. Personally, I wasn't able to understand much of it until I did some intense study of Greek history just to get the context for Plato's writings. "

"Wow, what an amazing piece of history this writing is! You really cannot understate the importance of Plato's "The Republic." The writing explores what an ideal state/nation/society is and how to achieve it. I won't go into too much detail, but the writing covers A LOT of ground. It discusses the nature of justice, the theory of forms, the immortality of the soul, and the role of philosophy and poetry in society. If you consider yourself a learned person, you cannot skip over this writing from 380 BC. The insight it provides to our world TO THIS DAY is simply amazing."

"It is interesting sometimes to read about ancient ideology and the vision of the greatest man of this earth. Greek philosophy has always been a good idea and this book is an essencial work of art for those who want their sense of understanding this world go beyond reality."
