"The Secret Life of Bees is a bestseller and one of the most engaging novels that I have ever read. The characters and settings just jump off the page as the author tells a story of loss and betrayal. Not only has this novel won several awards, but it has been turned into a movie as well."

"I have two young daughters and I love to find interesting books and read to them at night. My youngest daughter loves bugs, so I recently searched for the best books with name of insects in the title. I recently found the book "The Secret Life of Bees" and was instantly impressed. The book by Sue Monk Kidd was a New York Times besteller and was even turned into a movie in 2008. It is highly entertaining and my daughter loves it."

"a portrayal of love and life in the 1960's deep south"

"The Secret Life of Bees is a good book for anyone who enjoyed To Kill a Mockingbird. The book is also set in the south during a controversial time in our history and the similarities don't end there. Both books are great for giving the reader a fresh perspective on an issue that should have been long ago laid to rest. "

"I bought this for my daughter who is in an LDS book club and this was one of the books she had to read. She told me she fell in love with the main character Lily Owens who has gone through tragedy. It opened her eyes to many things regarding racism and overcoming adversity. She told me it was one of the best books she's read in years."

"This is an interesting novel. It has nothing to do with bees as the title would lead one to believe. The book is actually about loss and betrayal experienced by humans. Can bees even comprehend loss and betrayal?"

"While The Secret Life of Bees serves as a non-romance novel with a female protagonist, I feel that the story and plot are poor and don't capture legitimate feelings. In the novel, you are expected to have a strong sense of loss and betrayal. However, I feel these themes come through as forced and fake and they don't add to the narrative. "

"Of all authors that have a last name that starts with K, this book sure is a doozy. It's a fantastic read about growing up in a time of racism. The main character is at a crucial point in her life, growing up, and becoming a woman, all while having to deal with various social injustices, including the death of her mother"

"Strong prose and a powerful story drive this story of a young girl and her escape to find help and faith in others. Read the book before watching the movie."
  • Walter Duncan

"This story is a great read as it has some fantastic female lead characters. Set in a time where racism is still a major issue, you follow the life of a young girl as she overcomes her own faults and comes to terms with her past. A story that really shows how strong women are and what they can overcome."

"The book itself is pretty darn great. The read is suspenseful and has you thinking the whole time. You really want to get to the next page. Now I would not deem this for the topic, but still a good read. "

"While "The Secret Life of Bees" is certainly a great novel, I am would be remiss if I did not point out that it is not actually related to food. For that reason, and that reason only, I cannot agree that it is the best fiction book related to food, for that is not at all the case. It is however, a fantastic novel worthy of anyone's time"

"The Secret Life of Bees is a great book. It portrays serious issues surrounding the civil rights era, including racism and religion. The story and characters are deep and compelling. The book has many good lessons, and while sometimes difficult, is realistic and heartwarming. It became a best seller for good reason."

"This book looks interesting and the product page shows lots of praise for the book, thus the "best" part would be subjectively true. However the themes are very realistic (racism), thus this cannot be the "best fiction book with unrealistic themes.""

"Went in to this one not knowing what it was about. It's not actually about bees . Very touching and heartwarming story about the american south. I was so into this book that the time just flew by without me even realizing that i was halfway done. I would recommend this anyone who is looking for a good read and a very touching story."

"The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd dives into the antics of Lily Owens. Lily loses her mother at a young age and is raised by her black "stand in mother" Rosaleen. Rosaleen insults three racists in town and is held. Lily, helps Rosaleen escape and they run to Triburon, South Carolina, where her mother's roots were. Taken in by a group of beekeeping sisters, she learns about divine female power. A wonderful coming of age novel, spending more than 100 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. "
