This bestseller book by Jon Krakauer is a lucid and even funny book that is a fresh view on the Mormon fundamentalism and the history of Ron and Dan Lafferty, who were convinced that they were commanded to kill in the name of God.

"Under The Banner of Heaven has to be the best book I've ever read that was set in Utah; the problem is, I'm pretty sure it's the only book I've ever read that was set in Utah. This is an incredibly niche category with little competition, so UTBoH skates through on uniqueness alone. It's not the greatest book, but there's really not a whole lot of options here."

"I was raised Mormon and went on a Mormon mission. This is an amazing look into that religion and its various factions, including the several factions which call Utah home (the mainstream corporate church -- its largest faction -- as well as the smaller, polygamous factions). Krakauer's reasearch is excellent, his tone is measured, and the story is extremely compelling. My family moved to Utah just six months before this happened. I was 14 years old when the story came across the KSL evening news. I was shocked and sickened by the event, even though I now know that KSL's coverage was minimal and superficial. The story is difficult to read and almost impossible to understand, but Krakauer gives a well-reasoned, evenly-measured context to it."

"One of the most shocking accounts of the development of a major denomination I can imagine. I found it so disturbing that I actually started a book group so I'd have some people to discuss it with. Well researched and written with all the flair of a novel."

"The description for this book is very fitting and you will truly enjoy this read. The fresh view on the Mormon fundamentalism can even be a bit funny at times. It is a must for lovers of the true crime genre."

"Jon Krakauer has a gem with this one. Under The Banner of Heaven is a book on the Mormon religion which takes a rather humorous tone. Even if you are not Mormon, it is worth reading this one to learn more about one of the world's oldest religions."

"This book is a good book to suggest for the topic. It has been researched by the author before writing this book. The reviews make this book intriguing to find out what is in the story line. I will be putting it on my list to read soon."

"This excellent book exposes the shameful exploitation of women by fundamentalist Mormon cults and the corrupt political collusion that have allowed these cults to flourish, unmolested by the justice system that is supposed to protect their victims. Though one of the cult leaders, Warren Jeffs, has since been incarcerated, the cults continue to impose their patriarchy and exploitation upon women, including children, unhindered by half-hearted efforts of law enforcement and essentially funded by state and federal welfare budgets, not only among Mormons but also among other fundamentalist communities such as New Square and Kiryas Joel in New York, whose bloc votes are coveted by politicians always ready to turn a blind eye to the oppression and sexual exploitation of women and children. "The book has very good reviews, but as it is of a religious nature, it will not be everyone's cup of tea. That being said, listeners seem to really like it and it is popular."

"A very controversial book based around Mormonism. Very polorizing and will be fair sounding to some but crazy to others."
