A free fantasy browser MMO

Games of Thrones: Winter is Coming is a free browser-based MMO for Windows. It does its best to recreate the gritty Games of Thrones experience by tasking you with taking back the Iron Throne alone or with friends. You’ll build your kingdom, grow your armies, and take part in 3D battles while enjoying the fantastic graphics.

Is Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming Legit?

Yes, Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming is an officially licensed Warner Bros game based on the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones. Developed by YOOZOO Games, you’ll find the characters bear a striking resemblance to the actors, actors, and actresses in the game as the license allows them to use their likeness, along with all the music from the TV show.

How do I play Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming

Because Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming is a browser-based game, you don’t need to download and install any software, although there is a dedicated desktop app available.

After creating your account and launching the game, you’ll be thrown straight into the action. Luckily you have plenty of advisors like Melisandre and Jon Snow on hand to help you navigate the game and explain how to play. The beginning tutorial does an excellent job bringing you up to speed with the game’s basic mechanics, such as building, researching, and recruiting units for your armies.

While you’ll see plenty of familiar faces as you progress through the game, you play as a custom-created Lord from Westeros with a castle of your own. Your overall goal is to bring peace by uniting all of the seven kingdoms.

Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming gameplay

A significant portion of the game requires you to build your empire. If you’ve ever played an empire-building sim before, you’ll feel right at home. For newcomers, it can be confusing at first, as there are lots of options to choose from.

You’ll need to research technologies, construct new buildings, train and raise your armies, acquire powerful commanders to lead in battle, and complete story quests to gain resources and XP so you can level up your Lord and your kingdom.

Managing your resources is vital to success, and knowing what to prioritize could be the key to victory as most actions are time-gated. You can, however, spend resources to speed up your research, building, and training.

You can gain resources by building resource-generating buildings, destroying rebel camps and bases, attacking other players, or taking over resource nodes (called Gathering Sites)  located throughout the map.

To start gathering resources, you need to tap the ‘Gather’ button and send soldiers to take over the Gathering Site. Only when your soldiers return to your territory with the resources will you be able to claim and use them. Each army has its own capacity, which determines how many resources they can gather and carry back.

You’ll also find other gameplay elements to keep you busy during your conquest, such as the RPG mini-games where you can collect iconic commanders like Sansa Stark. You can equip with them items, gain experience points and take part in tower defense games where hordes of enemies will try to break through.

During these mini-game battles, you can take control of your forces and determine the formation of your characters, and use unique abilities and skills. Or you can let the game’s AI simulate the battle for you.

Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming game modes

There’s only one game mode in Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming. You can play solo or team up with other players by creating an Alliance. Working together gives you many advantages like increased diplomacy, the ability to trade resources, rally each other’s armies, and coordinate attacks.

A vital tool is the ‘Help’ feature. Whenever you’re performing a task like building or training, you can request ‘Help’ from members of your Alliance. Every member who clicks yes reduces the time required by one minute - giving you and your teammates an essential benefit.

Another reason to join an Alliance is to occupy a Great City. These locations are visible on the map and often mimic cities from the show like Winterfell and King’s Landing. At the beginning of the game, these cities start as neutral, but anyone can occupy them, giving buffs to your Kingdom and units.

Finally, only by occupying enough cities and accumulating power can you rule the Iron Throne, which you can’t achieve as a solo player. In other words, joining an Alliance is a must if you want to win.

What languages does Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming support?

Are they any alternatives?

You won’t find any similar Game of Thrones licensed games, but there alternative games with a similar theme of kingdom building and conquest, such as Kingdom. It also features a fantasy setting, and to succeed, you need to collect resources, defend your settlements and expand your territory. Another alternative worth checking out is Conquest, a digital board game similar to Risk, where your objective is to take over the world.

A well-designed browser game

If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones and conquest games that require tactical thinking, resource management, and RPG elements like leveling up, you’ll enjoy Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming. While this game doesn’t introduce any significant new mechanics, it does provide a well-polished experience with plenty of famous characters and lore from books and TV shows.
