Did you know that acapella singing was first used for religious music? Singing without musical accompaniment began in the 19th century. It was first practiced in Jewish and Christian churches as it was intended to be used for worship. Those churches still practice acapella singing to this day. Islam has also adapted such way of worship. To this day, schools have actual acapella groups on their campuses. These groups usually incorporate vocal percussion or beatboxing into their repertoire. This style is seen in the widely-known movie “Pitch Perfect” and TV show “Glee”, which uses acapella singing as its theme.

In the US, an annual college acapella competition is held in the form of ICCA (International Championship of Collegiate A Capella). This competition highlights the aspects of vocal performance for a high-scoring performance. Different elements are taken into consideration when scoring. Judges look for excellent balance and blend in singing. They also look for quality and inventiveness of arrangement, rhythmic accuracy, and even diction. The popularity of acapella has remained in the mainstream thanks to the help of TV shows and movies that focus on such singing style. Tech companies have also developed acapella singing apps and lip syncing apps that can be used to practice solo singing. These acapella apps are continuously evolving to cater to the demands of the younger generation. Now, aspiring singers or even people who just want to be entertained can sing acapella with just their mobile phones.
