DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that Ishval and Amestris conflict from the action anime Fullmetal Alchemist has a real-life basis? Its creator Hiromu Arakawa based it on Japanese culture despite having European references. It was during the Meiji Restoration featuring the Ainu and Wajin people.
Arakawa learned that her ancestors are Wajin while her relatives are half-Ainus. Confused about her ancestry, she used it as an inspiration for Scar’s character and the Ishvalans. How? The indigenous people Ainu represents Ishvalans. While the native Japanese people, Wajin represents the Amestrians. During the 14th century, the Ainus has to intermarry with the native Japanese people. Hiding as a tool to prevent discrimination, it became a way in erasing the Ainu heritage. Meanwhile, in Fullmetal Alchemist, it became the inspiration for the Ishval Civil War. In the anime, an Amestrian soldier shot an Ishvalan civilian causing for a conflict to arise. This major event played an important role throughout the anime action series. It started gaining recognition from its viewers. In 2006, it won the Animation of the Year award from the Tokyo Anime Fair. It also received several awards in American Anime Awards including Best Long Series.
