DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that Amazon Alexa was inspired by the voice of the federation computer aboard the Starship Enterprise in the Star Trek series? (BTW, you can get those classic Star Trek sounds with these great apps). However, unlike the computer voice that can be heard on the federation computer that is usually associated with talking robots and machines, Alexa has a natural, lifelike voice. This is achieved through natural-language processing (NLP) and machine learning. NLP is a field of artificial intelligence that is involved in speech recognition, natural language understanding, and natural language generation. These three skills enable an artificially intelligent machine to process human language and to respond in kind.
Alexa’s voice is not based on one person’s voice, it has learned its unique voice from studying thousands of recordings of human voices. Aside from having her own voice, Alexa also has a unique personality. Amazon has a personality team made up of writers and comedians, among others, to make the AI friendlier and more conversational. She has a celebrity crush, she can sing, and she’s an ESFJ on the Myers-Briggs personality scale. She also has a “disengagement mode,” wherein she replies with “I’m not going to respond to that” when insulted or cursed. Amazon is doing its best to humanize Alexa, injecting her with empathy and the capability to respond to real people in a real way.
