Did you know that YIFY was derived from the website's founder Yiftach Swery? He founded YIFY Torrents in 2010 while he was studying computer science at the University of Waikato. In fact, the first YIFY movie releases were uploaded to The Pirate Bay after the result of Swery's experiment with the x264 video codec to encode HD movies without taking too much space in a hard drive. In 2011, the brand gained enough traffic which launched its official website. The word "YIFY' even became the most searched term on BitTorrents aside from Torrentz2. As the years went, the website was able to generate millions of page views each day. However, in 2014, Swery decided to retire and no longer work for the website. This resulted in the website to rebrand to YTS, while the management and encoding were handed over to its existing team of staff. Unfortunately, in March 2015, its current domain was frozen and suspended without unclear reasons. Nonetheless, the website was able to successfully moved to a new domain.
But in October 2015, the site went down without any warning and was later confirmed to permanently shut down. The website was shut down due to a lawsuit from the MPAA against Swery. Surprisingly, both parties agreed to a private settlement outside the court. But since its shutdown, YIFY has been used in numerous copycat websites with some claiming to be the new YIFY.
