"When it comes to tower defense games, Bloons TD remains to be the most addicting to play. I've played loads of TDs and deleted them off my phone eventually because they were quite a drag but Bloons TD always keeps me occupied in the best way!"

"I remember playing the first Tower Madness game on my dad's iPad and that was the first time I was introduced to TD games. Tower Madness 2 is a nice upgrade from the original although the gameplay remains pretty much the same."

"Dungeon Defense gotta be the most unique td on this list if we're doing a comparison with the game's graphics that remind me of old school GameBoy cartridge games."

Before they became a mobile craze and phenomenon, tower defense games, otherwise known as TD, was a subgenre of real-time strategy (RTS) PC games. But, the beginning of tower defense games dates back to the early ’90s with an arcade game called “Rampart.” Ahead of its time, the game’s primary goal was to defend a castle by placing cannons across the map. Also, the player has to repair them between several waves of attackers. Because of the game’s accumulated success and innovation, it saw its birth across different platforms. Some examples were Super NES, Game Boy, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Gamecube, and the most recent one being PlayStation Network. A few years later, user-created maps for tower defense games started to appear in PC games. Starcraft, Age of Empires II, and Warcraft were among those that proved to be quite prominent in online lobbies.

A few years later, independent game developers started creating their own stand-alone tower defense browser games by using Adobe Flash. Before, tower defense games had themes involving space and medieval times. Players defended castles, trees, ships, and bases from monsters, aliens, and all sorts of mythical creatures. Now, child-friendly versions of the game have become a huge hit. Instead of defending castles from monsters, players pop balloons and protect a picnic from ants. The most famous one involved defending your own house from invading zombies by using the very plants that you grow right outside your house. Who would have thought that a single game made by an independent developer would turn into a full-blown genre? And that very same genre would become a multi-million dollar platform? Tower defense games have come a long way and only the future knows where it’s headed to next.
