DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that Gollum, J.R.R. Tolkien’s troubled and mentally-ill antagonist given life by Andy Serkis in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, is not the first main motion-captured character in a feature-length film? While Serkis is universally regarded as the Godfather of Motion-Captured Acting for his phenomenal performance as the balding, pale, old hobbit, it is Ahmed Best and his performance as Jar Jar Binks in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace that is credited for opening motion-capture acting, or mo-cap acting, in mainstream movies. But make no mistake though, Serkis almost single-handedly raised mo-cap acting into its current glory.
Serkis, who began his career as a theater and touring actor, has the skills to excel in acting even without the motion-tracking suit, as he has shown in movies like Black Panther and Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll. But one can say that movies where Andy Serkis played a CGI character boosted his reputation - and his net worth :) - more than movies where he did not act behind a suit. After the Gollum actor proved it was possible to act even while wearing a silly hugging bodysuit, other filmmakers and actors followed. Tom Hanks used a suit in the film The Polar Express, as well as big names like Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, Angelina Jolie, and John Malkovich, who all needed to have their movements captured in the animated movie, Beowulf.
