DID YOU KNOW?
The ILOVEYOU virus is considered to be one of the worst computer viruses of all time. Released back on May 4 of the year 2000, it managed to wreck havoc across the internet all over the world. But what is the ILOVEYOU virus that caused chaos back in 2000? Categorized as a worm, it would hide in an email with the subject "ILOVEYOU", and then inside the email would be an attachment called "love letter for you". During this time, windows weren't showing the file extensions, so people thought it was a simple love letter from the sender. Once downloaded and executed, it would then do a lot of things to the computer it has infected. It created copies of itself and hid the copies all over the hard drive, it would add new files to the registry key. It would also download a file called WIN-BUGSFIX.EXE which would then steal passwords and send it to the hacker's email address. The most destructive of all, it replaced several different files on the computer with copies of itself. Resulting in the loss of dozens of files. It would then send itself via email to the contact list using the user's address. What made this a "deadly" and effective virus, was the fact that it used social engineering to make it spread. People couldn't resist opening a letter from a secret admirer. This made the virus spread into millions of computers in a span of 2 days. The damage estimates up to $10 billion.
