WHAT’S THE MEANING?

CarPlay was previously known as “iOS in the Car.” It takes the user interface of your iPhone and puts it onto the infotainment screen of your car dashboard. This means that the car’s own system is replaced by the iOS screen when your iPhone is plugged in, complete with app icons. Some newer car models (like BMW 5-Series) now support wireless CarPlay, via the car’s Bluetooth connection.

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that a thousand of Apple employees were once rumored to be working on developing an electric car? In 2014, Apple began working on “Project Titan.” It was said that more or less 1,000 employees were working on this project at a secret location near its headquarters in Cupertino City in California's Silicon Valley. But the car project was shelved in 2016 due to internal strife, leadership issues, and other problems. The project’s focus has shifted to developing self-driving car software instead of an actual car. The shift was because of hundreds of employees being reassigned, let go, or leaving on their own including more than 120 software engineers. The remaining members returned to developing the project again and rumored to have been given a deadline in 2017 to prove the feasibility of the self-driving car system. Plans for Apple-designed car by early 2020s are still ongoing as it seems but the company’s plans could change over the coming months.

Tesla Motors, known for its self-driving car, believes Apple will not have its own vehicle ready by 2020. If Apple’s Project Titan will be successful, Tesla will then have an outright competitor. When a group of select auto manufacturers released cars with CarPlay technology, one interesting name is missing from the list -- Tesla. This means those who own Tesla cars won't get to try the best CarPlay apps for iPhone
