did you know
Did you know that the first mobile phone with a dual camera was released in 2007? It was the Samsung SCH-B710, with a dual 1.3MP rear camera. The dual cameras were used to display 3D content on the phone’s LCD screen, which had a parallax barrier to enable users to see 3D images without 3D glasses. The next phone with a dual camera was the HTC EVO 3D in 2011, continuing the 3D mobile phone technology. In a dual camera system dedicated to capturing 3D images, the function of the secondary camera is to map the depth of objects in the area in front of the camera, giving the image an illusion of shallow depth of field. However, not all dual camera systems have this function. Some, such as the one on the LG G5, has a wide-angle lens on the secondary camera, providing the user with a wider field of view without having to physically move back. Conversely, iPhone models starting from the iPhone 7 Plus have a secondary telephoto lens that has 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom. Another use for the secondary camera is for monochrome imaging. The Huawei P9 has two cameras that nearly identical – except the secondary camera doesn’t have an RGB color filter.
