    DID YOU KNOW?

Trying to learn Armenian? Well, here's one interesting fact that may give you a head start in your feat. Did you know that the language uses letters instead of numbers? If you been using apps to learn Armenian, you've probably noticed this. Unlike other languages in the world, each letter in the Armenian alphabet represents a number. One proof of this is the Armenian calendar that contains the language's letters. Also, in case you missed it, there are no numeric characters in Armenian's ancient calculations. But there is an exception to this - the Armenian letters ? and ?. These two do not have a numerical value because they had only been introduced to the alphabet when Arabic numerals were already in play.

Now, you might be wondering how numbers in the language are obtained. The answer is simple: addition. The Armenian numerical system is written left-to-right, very much like its linguistic counterpart. In most instances, writing the numbers in descending order is the norm. But it doesn't affect the numeric value because only addition is performed. Here's a clearer example: ???? is tantamount to 1975. The letter ? corresponds to 1000, ? to 900, ? to 70, and ? to 5. Do the math and you'd come up with the same value. Even if you rearrange the letters, it would stay the same. If the number reaches beyond 9000, a line is drawn above the letter to signify that it is multiplied by 10, 000. You find this quite complicated? Don't worry you'll get used to it with the passage of time. Of course, using apps for language learning could come in handy, so take advantage of those!
