DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that playing video games can break bad habits and that includes smoking? Say bye to those nicotine patches and gum that could lead to dizziness, headache and vomiting because one of the answers is right in front of you—and it is definitely fun! An article in Reader’s Digest says that playing a two-player video game is one way of staving off your mental and physical cravings. In fact, a joint study by Brown University and the American Cancer Society revealed that nicotine-deprived smokers were able to reduce their cravings by playing two-player games with their friends or romantic partners. Perhaps, you are now asking yourselves ‘How does that even work?’. Gaming is often seen as a recreational activity during leisure time, but little did people know that the cooperative play and puzzle-solving games trigger the exact same reward centers as nicotine does. Cool, right?
On a related note, MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft are also proven to improve social skills. A significant improvement in the social behavior of kids who engage in such co-op video games has been observed. Interestingly, if you know someone who often suffers from an anxiety attack, invite them to play a game even just for a while because another study suggests that games reduce anxiety. Inasmuch as games offer a lot of psychological benefits, bear in mind to take everything in moderation.
