Did you know that Musical.ly (now TikTok) first started when Alex Zhu, founder of Musical.ly, saw a group of teens taking selfies and videos while the others were listening to music? By combining music, video and social network, he and his co-founder Yang were able to create an app called Musical.ly. Musical.ly has more than 40 million active users daily. This lip-sync app became so successful that several app developers tried to create apps similar to like Musical.ly. Apps like Dubsmash, Flipagram and Funimate are some examples of these.
Since technology and social network users are getting younger and younger, creating apps like Musical.ly that targets tweens and teens are now becoming famous. According to an article, one factor is that Musical.ly is an app that won't peak interest from Moms and other older people. Furthermore, lip-syncing is known to entertain and attract the audience. One example is when the famous Musical.ly personality Baby Ariel gained over 27 million followers. Some of her popular videos on Musical.ly were also compiled on YouTube. She even gained followers on some of her social media accounts such as Instagram and YouTube.
