"This book was the recipient of numerous awards, and with good reason. Cornelius Vanderbilt is a fascinating figure not just because of his wealth and entrepreneurial spirit, but as a symbol of his age. As the title says, he was the first tycoon, before Carnegie, Gould, or the Rockefellers. This book is well-researched and incredibly detailed. If you like biography, and are interested in American history, you should read this book. Vanderbilt lived for 83 years, so his life covers a lot of events and personalities. And if you are interested in current politics and economics, you can see the basis of today's institutions in Vanderbilt's lifetime. It's pretty scholarly, so if you're looking for a quick, easy read, this book is not it. However, it's totally worth the effort."
