"Teacher report - I was referred to the book by a fellow teacher. I used this book for central message - one has to choose to recognize and preserver when overcoming societal challenges, such as racism and sexism. At the end of the story, she finds it, within herself, to be herself, with family love and support. With the students I have used summarizing and finding central message via Gretchen Courtney strategies"

"The solution solves the problem of a person who wants to read the book. It takes them directly to the area where they can purchase several versions of the book. At the Amazon area you can also read a good bit more or the book to decide if you really want to purchase it or not."

"Oh wow the book cover for this one is very beautiful. I am willing to go out of my way to purchase the book just because of its beautiful cover, and now I am interested with this book because of it. I am not very interested with the topic mentioned or whether I care for it but this as a solution, I feel like it is in a good intention to be appropriate with the topic."

"Good book, maybe not for a younger child, but I think an older child can understand the story and the lesson in it. The book is written from the view of an 11 year old. The basis is the life of this girl her family and the civil rights era. Love the historical perspective."

"This is a great and touching memoir of the struggles Maya Angelou experienced as a child. It deals with her facing a lot of abuse and racism as a child and struggling to make sense of it. It has some very heavy sections and is not a light-hearted read."
