"This is the most amazing account of how to beat the system of bullying and child abuse, and nastiness in its extreme. Not a happy story, but it was peppered with more great outcomes than let downs. Clarence's ability to always face her demons, and then find a positive way to overcome the tragic sadness that accompanies such a life, as overwhelming in this story. Every time her mother hurt her, physically or mentally, she went on to do something positive. This has been a real eyeopener for me. We all cry foul so easily, and how easy would this have been for 'Clearie' as well. But no, she excelled at school she worked up to 3 jobs once. She 'smiled' through adversity while working at Rosie's, I could go on and on. There were two accounts that had me laughing out loud - her morning in church with Aunt Ina and the time when she fought Eastman by jumping on his back. She wrote these two scenes will great hilarity. I am now reading the sequel, Beyond Ugly, and thoroughly enjoying this too. Must read! and appreciate what you have, and that you don't have to spend the rest of your life wishing you had your mother's love. This broke my heart."

"This is sort of in that it's wonderful but it's so terrible category. I actually really like extremely sad and dramatic stories so this would suit that very well for me. Oddly enough what might peak your curiosity about the writing too is if you had any MTG experience since the author used to work for Wizards of the Coast. That definitely makes me even more curious about this book."

    #16Scarred

    Scarred
Scarred is an autobiography written by Sophie Andrews, first published in 2008. It tells the story of her childhood under the monster that is her adopted father.

Growing up, Sophie carried a terrible secret. She was her father's slave, in the most horrific ways imaginable. At just a few months old she was adopted by a couple that seemed comfortably off and perfectly respectable to the outside world. But behind closed doors, Sophie's childhood was a living hell. Her father spent the next decade grooming her for abuse and when Sophie's mother left for good, that very night, he told Sophie that from now on she would sleep in his bed. Unable to cope, Sophie spiraled into suicidal misery. She began to self-harm to try and escape the agony. But one day she went too far and at 16, ended up in a psychiatric unit. It was here that she finally confronted the horrors of home and began the painful journey of rebuilding her life. A phenomenally courageous woman, Sophie now works for the Samaritans and helps other young people in need. Harrowing yet compelling, this is a searing and truly inspirational account of overcoming the worst abuse and self-harm.

"The story touches into a rare book subject and that is abuse that a child takes from another child. It has potential to be a groundbreaking book but fails to do so in a large way. The book is sad for the sake of being sad and although it gives a background of both characters, you never get enough of a depth of character in each to really get into the book. This to me was a meaner less satisfying version of Judy Blume's Blubber."
