"A great in depth but light heated look at various world cultures and why people do the things they do. Fascinating to learn just why meat is forbidden in some countries and why animals are worshipped. IF you're looking for a cookbook, this isn't really what you're seeking."

"This philosophical look at food does not set out to convert you to a way of thinking, but it does encourage mindful eating. This will help you develop more awareness about what you eat and why you eat, which is important since it impacts both us and the planet."

Fast Food Nation:The Dark Side of the All-American Meal

"This book uncovers the horrors behind fast food besides the obvious health implications. It also relates well with health implications, since other countries are gaining weight because of our fast food, then it's obvious that fast food is the problem. A very interesting lecture, suggested to everyone."

#4The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals

The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals
The Omnivores Dilemma is a book by Michael Pollan that tells the story about food.  It is sometimes, one of the factors of politics, culture and history. Learning what we eat even of the simplest everyday meals is one of the best ways to know what we are, and where are we heading to.

"I love to eat, and love to read good books about food and eating. Both of thse facts brought me to The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan. I've had this book recommended to me so many times that finally I broke down and bought myself a copy. I have to say that I enjoyed Pollan's storytelling style and plain manner of expressing things even more than I expected. And thanks to Pollan's book, I don't think I'll ever be able to eat a Chicken McNugget again. "

#5In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto

In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto
With In Defense of Food, Pollan proposes a new (and very old) answer to the question of what we should eat that comes down to seven simple but liberating words: "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." Pollan’s bracing and eloquent manifesto shows us how we can start making thoughtful food choices that will enrich our lives, enlarge our sense of what it means to be healthy, and bring pleasure back to eating.

""My Portugal" is fairly specific in terms of its recipes, which, obviously, focus on Portuguese cuisine, but it does do a very good job at accomplishing what it attempts to do. The photography and the layouts are quite pleasant, and the recipes are easy to understand and follow. You also get a decent sense of what the author is like. I would definitely recommend it to someone looking for food from this country or region."

"For a revised and updated edition, this book has remarkably few reviews. Food books are a very crowded "niche" so I guess I'm not too surprised by that. I think some will be disappointed that so much space is devoted to stories and not more and more recipes. It all depends on what you're looking for in these kind of books."

But all the recipes and information is about Portuguese cuisine. So if you are not interested in that, then this is book is a bore."

"First of all, if you have never read any of Michael Pollan's books, you are missing out. I would suggest reading The Omnivore's Dilemma first, but this book is very good also. It is a look at how instead of us conquering and "domesticating" four kinds of plants, they have in fact figured out how to use us to propagate their species. The section on apples is my favorite because it seems like this plant completely reinvented itself just so we would enjoy it and spread it around."
