"THis book examines the life and career of Sister Benedetta Carlini, who was the abbess of a convent in renaissance Italy. The title of this book would lead one to believe that it focuses on her lesbian identity and relationship (not that lesbian identity, per se, didn't exist at that time, but that's a different discussion). The main focus of the book, however, is on Sister Benedetta's position as abbess, and her visions and stigmata, which turned out to be faked. Her relationship with one of the nuns is but a minor part of her story. This book is a window into a time and a world that is very different than ours, and it's a fascinating one."

"The story itself did not have the depth or much that was unique compared to similar books. The author does do a spectacular job of taking the nuances of a small old fashioned town in Italy and makes to you feel as if you were there. This book may be ideal if setting is important and this is your type of setting. Otherwise it is pretty good but not a must read."

"I've always been a history nerd, so the setting of this book is what first attracted me. I enjoyed the worldbuilding, it felt real and deep. The characters were great and, at least to my mind, a good non-stereotyped view of LGBTQ characters."

"Tender Warriors is an interesting choice of LGBTQ-themed novel. Rachel Guido Devries does a pretty nice job of presenting the plot, and her writing style makes this a fairly strong page turner. I wouldn't recommend this book to a general audience, but it is certainly for those who are particularly interested in this genre."

"This book of poems invites readers into the the world of lovers, friends, and life in the eyes of an Italian-American lesbian. There is immense passion and fire in the poems, and takes on the dominant/patriarchal society that she and the ones she writes about in her book live in. Each poem is carefully crafted, and allows readers to view her life through a window ablaze with her feelings. "

"I am not sure that this is about lesbians. This about an Italian woman. I think that if she is a lesbian, then this would fit. Seems like a generic biography however."

"This is a pretty deep book that is mainly a bunch of essays about the lives of lesbians and their various histories. I found it a bit difficult to get through, to be honest. There were some good writers featured in the book, yes, but I disagreed with a lot of the more feminist perspectives presented here and it became difficult to read. Not to mention it also gets rather boring at parts. So I do not know if overall I would recommend this book unless reading lesbian history essays is your passion. "
