"Found this to be an excellent retelling of 'The Great Calamity' as the Great Chicago Fire was called back in the day. Offers a street by street description of how the insatiable fire travelled from the West Side, jumping two rivers due to a strong prairie wind, to the South Side and finally the North. Plenty of great photos, sketches and survivor stories of how the exhausted fire fighters tried in vain to contain it."

"This is an excellent book about Chicago, however, it doesn't really include much about the Chicago fire. It discusses it, but I think that there more focused books about it."

"Not a bad read, but not what I expected. I guess I had higher hopes for this book. The one thing I don't really understand is why it is such a popular title. Maybe it's because most people, like myself, thought it was going to cover H.H. Holmes and the World's Fair. Instead, we got the architecture of the World's fair and not much about it. As I said, it was an okay read but not worthy of a second read."

"I'm a huge history buff - I love anything set in a discrete time and place, anything that exlores a new and interesting setting. Into the Whirlwind is no exception, set in Chicago at the time of the Great Chicago Fire. A fascinating and well-researched setting is the backdrop for a sweet and - dare I say it - whirlwind romance, which is well worth it for any fan of romance or history!"

"Good book about the fires, if a little too simplistic. It's very to the point, which is nice in a way, but I didn't feel like I really got to "know" the people talked about, and it was more about the circumstances of the fires, and not the people involved. As a reference though, it's pretty good."
