"Interesting read about Orga's life after he left Turkey. I felt like I could relate to the character as he struggled to make a living and survive in England. It was a really interesting story that held my interest and I would recommend to others."

"For lovers of poetry I think this should be pretty much indispensable. Veli is a great poet, a great writer, generally speaking, and a man with his eyes wide open to the craziness of the world and the hypocrisy of the powerful. The book in itself is fascinating, as much because of Veli's talent and brilliance, as it is for the insight into Turkish society. No kudos to the publisher though, they did a poor job with the material quality of the book - it's poorly printed and the copy I had almost disintegrated between my hands after a while. But the book is worth a read, definitely."

"This is the second Orhan Pamuk book that I have read, SNOW being the first. As with SNOW, BLACK puts the reader through dense and often obscure background of the characters while getting to the point of the plot. Given the turkish government attempts to repress this author, I feel like I am getting a window into the country and the character of the citizens. It is fiction that carries the weight of a dire social and cultural reality. This is not a book for the featherweight reader."

"This is not necessarily the easiest book to read from front to back. It has many stories, themes, and ideas that it bounces throughout. I think the book is a great perspective though. Showing off and describing from his own point of view, we get a self-reflection that draws you back to the book constantly."

I think Inalcik's book is so well written and contains so much information. The amount of research that went into this book is astonishing. I think so much of Inalcik that I have ordered his other books. "

"West had always mesmerizing advancement through the intellectualism and scientific enlightenment. In White Castle by Orhan Pamuk, it is very considerate and insightful to see how the East really looks up to West and its traditional way of interpreting the notion of "success and accomplishment". Though they are at the different end of cultural spectrum, the notion of achievement pertains to both in the same way the water for sustaining life. The book was full of captivating and insightful notes described in a comprehensive manner so that the average reader could think and imagine himself into. The whole book is historically didactic and would enlighten you more about the historical background of our modern achievements."
