"This book is a classic and ahead of it's time. This is often on high school reading lists, and rightly so as you can draw parallels in society even today. I highly recommend it for teenagers, because they are at an age where they can think a bit more about how society functions and put them ahead of the curve, rather than just laugh it off (though it's good for adults too in that respect)."

Todd is just a month away from becoming a man, but in the midst of the cacophony, he knows that the town is hiding something from him -- something so awful Todd is forced to flee with only his dog, whose simple, loyal voice he hears too. With hostile men from the town in pursuit, the two stumble upon a strange and eerily silent creature: a girl. Who is she? Why wasn't she killed by the germ like all the females on New World? Propelled by Todd's gritty narration, readers are in for a white-knuckle journey in which a boy on the cusp of manhood must unlearn everything he knows in order to figure out who he truly is."

You will not find a compelling plot either as the events narrated are actually just marginal to the real content of the book: its characters. Each of them is a small world in itself, which the author explores in a way that reflects the silliness of our own humanity. Definitely worth reading!"

With that said, I do not believe that it is one of the best books for older teen boys. I am a firm believer that science fiction is not for everyone. I think you really enjoy it or you really dislike it. If your son, brother, friend, etc. is into science fiction, than The Lord of the Rings is a MUST, if they aren't into science fiction, STEER CLEAR. It will ruin his love for reading. "

"Picked this up for my 16 year old son who is a picky reader. He enjoyed it so much he finished all 184 pages in one weekend! He has since loaned it to one of his close friends who is also enjoying the book immensely!"

"The Journal of Joshua Loper is a pretty phenomenal book. The story itself is pretty enthralling at times, and a very enjoyable read. Some of the sections are incredibly vivid in how they're written."

"A lot of kids who struggle with reading really find that historical fiction is a great choice because they are unburdened with having to imagine the story unfolding. This series of books is not only wonderful for older boys, but for older kids in general. Definitely geared toward boys, this series is much like the historical novels that American Girl stories follow and is a fantastic choice for avid and reluctant readers alike. "

From his humble beginnings to his rise to success, the book details the struggles the boxer endured during a time of deep racism, once facing imprisonment due to his fortune and success and the courage to answer to no one but himself. "This is an okay book. It's supposed to be for teen boys, but to be honest, it's a little corny and might hit like maybe eight or nine, or maybe even a bit younger. It's really corny all-American and I was reading John Grisham and Stephen King and Patricia Highsmith when I was in my teens, and especially Kurt Vonnegut and Aldous Huxley. Maybe if your kid is really sheltered or a bit slow?"
