""A Thousand Splendid Suns" very well might be one of the best books of the past twenty years or so, though it does face competition from many other excellent books, perhaps including other titles by this very same author. I was more familiar with his first book; this second one tells some similar stories that take place in the same sort of setting, but with different characters. It is engaging but occasionally difficult to get through due to some of the painful experiences that the characters face in a society that does not particularly value their perspective or their experiences. Definitely get it if you liked the author's other books."

"I thought the plot of this book sounded interesting, and it won the Pulitzer Prize, so I figured it had to be good. I could not have been more wrong. A large portion of the book was terribly dull due to a ton of unnecessary detail. And I really did not understand why the author chose the format he did. Maybe it was just all over my head, but I did not enjoy this book at all."

"I could never quite get into Sailing to Love like I wanted to. I love the concept as it speaks to how society often functioned in the early 1800's of having to force yourself to love someone. That said, the book simply misses the mark particularly how the protagonist just comes off as whiny most of the time. A nice try, but needs to feel closer to the heart than this attempt."

"I thought that this book was just okay. Some of the characters were interesting, but I think that the plot drug at some points. I also think that the writing was a bit strained during the middle of the book as if the author was just trying to stretch the story out. I think someone really interested in this time period may be able to overlook these deficincies, but there are probably better books out there."

"I would have to disagree with how well received this book was. This book appeals only towards a niche audience, has such a slow plot, and no character development at all. When something interesting is revealed about the character, you become interested and want to find out more however the author doesn't end up telling the context or backstory behind it. It's like being baited constantly as you progress through the story, thinking the answers will be revealed at the end, only to find out it was just a terrible ride."

The author does a good job of developing the relationships between not only the main characters, but also many of the secondary ones as well. This development helps make one feel more connection with the characters.
