"I had an old copy of this published by Persephone Books, and after losing it at some point in college, I wanted a replacement. I specifically wanted the same edition, as I really like the stated mission of Persephone as a publishing house, but I couldn't find it, so I got this edition. I couldn't tell you what the differences are, if there are any, but I'll be keeping my eyes open for the edition I had first, just out of principle. Either way, it's a great book -- surprising for the era in which it was written. "

"An okay read. I do like the authors other works but this one was just okay to me. The characters were well developed and at times I was intrigued, but the story just couldn't hold my interest from beginning to end. "

" This story is about a widow, Louise, in 1940's England. Her husband died, leaving her penniless. She then splits time between her three daughters, who are all rude to her, and resent having to help their mother. She also goes to a friends' inn paying a discounted price rent. Louise feels like she is imposing on everybody, because her daughters makes her feel that way. She has one son-in-law who actually enjoys her and is nice to her. Her husband was mean to her and her daughters treat her the same way. "

"If there’s one book I can relate to, it’s The Children Who Lived in a Barn. I grew up in a time where children were out all day without the supervision of parents. This book hits the nail on the head. However, I find that children now will probably have a hard time relating to such a book."

"Amusing but quite non eventful. The book suffers for lack of a plot or any real structure. A relatively easy read but not one that will stick with you."

"Persephone Books are usually a good lot. I bought Cheerful Weather for the Wedding and it seemed a little more stock than their other offerings. Bride drinks rum. Bride spills ink on dress. I'm not mocking it, but it's not for me."
