"An eye opener for anyone who wants to get into the world of dance. I've seen "The Red Slippers" and "Black Swan", so I knew what the negatives and stresses of dancing were, but those were still fictional stories about the harsh reality of dancing. Reading this account of a dancer's actual life brought things closer to perspective - even though it is a little dated - things that brought her down a nasty rabbit hole that included drugs and suicidal thoughts. I'm glad that Ms. Kirkland was able to kick her habit and publish this! I don't think reading it would have changed my mind on being a dancer (had I had the talent!) but I think it would've definitely made me better prepared for the world I was getting into. I have friends with young girls who aspire to be world class dancers, maybe I'll share this with them, too."

"The book Dancer seems to be a decent read. Although the dance passages are well-written and transports you to the studio watching the performance unfold, the rest of the novel is uneven. "

"I found this read a very eye opening look in to the world of ballet. I always suspected this type of scandal does go on to some degree, but I never realized how widespread it is. I would recommend this book to any parent thinking about signing their child up for ballet. It may just save them some heartbreak. "

"If you're a person who is into fairy tales, this might be a great read. I'm a stickler for originals however, so the idea of re-worked fairy tales isn't anything that I'm a big fan of. This one focuses on Rowena, and she likes to sneak out at night to dance, hence the title. She then convinces her sisters to do the same, and her father gets wind of what his daughters are doing. In true fairy tale fashion, he throws out a challenge to prospective suitors...the first one to determine where his daughters have been can marry the one he chooses. Not bad, but nothing great, in my opinion."

"This really is a classic. The name looked familiar and then I remembered hearing the Meg Ryan character talk about this book in the film You've Got Mail, with tears in her eyes. That was enough to convince me to read it and it really is a heartwarming, wholesome tale. It's something every young girl should read!"
