"Who has anything bad to say about this classic? It was a required reading when we were all younger and for good reason. It's a powerful, captivating story that teaches valuable lessons. I read this book to my young daughter because her school has yet to make the students read it and she said it's her favourite book of all time."

" Newbery books rarely steer me wrong. I had heard of this book for a very long time but never got around to reading it. I’m sad that it took me so long. This is such a classic tale of friendship and loss. We have all experienced losses and this book helps to show how love will give you strength. I can’t believe I waited this long, don’t be like me! "

"A nice little work of fiction that takes place during the depression. It is a story about junior high age kids and their struggles. Although fiction, there is a lot of accuracy as far as Alcatraz and also how mental illness was treated back then. This ties the book together very well. This books is a great fit for tying in history to junior high children. "

"I think that Hatchet (the first book in Brian's Saga) written by Gary Paulsen is a really good book. It's a story of survival with 13-year-old Brian using his wit and will and his hatchet to persevere after a plane crash leaves him alone in the Canadian wilderness. He makes plenty of mistakes, but he learns. The book kept me focused and on edge, worrying about Brian. The only thing that I didn't really like was his thoughts about his parents divorce. It felt unnecessary. Otherwise, it's a really good Newberry Honor book."
