"When I was hoping to learn a new language, a friend of mine suggested The Lexical Approach. I really wish they hadn’t. This book uses a lexical approach to teaching language which more or less teaches phrases and “chunks” of words. I found this method to be very ineffective. Three months later and I can’t speak ANY French. Hard pass."

"I suppose if I was trying to learn English, I would go ahead and spend the extra money to purchase a magnifying glass needed to see the words in this book. They are small. I mean tiny. I have perfect vision and this thing is still impossible to read. I catch myself putting my thumb and forefinger on the page in hopes of zooming in like i can on my iPhone. The words are all there, though. I guess."

"The Compact Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary (2 Volume Set) I love this dictionary. Sometimes I flip it open and read it just for fun, peering down at the page with my funky replacement magnifying glass (having lost the sleek one which came standard, tucked into its very own drawer), reading about the histories of my favorite words or finding new ones that I'll probably never have any occasion to use. This dictionary also makes an excellent end table, if you're not the sort of person who is bothered by coffee rings to your books. Mine looks like crap - battered and stained, scuffed on all sides from repeated moves. It's a set made to be used - sturdy binding, clear type, table-sized slipcase, handy drawer for stuff - and that just makes me love it more. In fact (and I realize that by now I am starting to sound a little insane), we have two copies in our house. People think this is excessive, but what if something happened to one of them? Better to have a spare, just in case."

"I originally got this book for my father who was having trouble speaking English after a medical incident he had to his head. He needed some assistance and learning to speak again and pronunciate his words so I bought this book for him to help his recovery. The book is rather straightforward and a good tool for helping even native English speakers to better enunciate their words. I got a little bit of you thought of it as I talk rather quick and don't necessarily always pronounce my words when I speak."

"Don't agree with the idea of this book at all. It tries to teach you how to write better by focusing on specific texts and examples, and very detailed theories about writing theory. But it's wrong! You want to become a better writer? Read! Read! Read everything! And write what you feel, write constantly, have others critique your writing, and try to learn! And then read some more! But don't read this book, it's too text-bookey!"

I know that initially learning English, knowing grammatical rules without knowing what the words mean isn't very helpful."

"I don't know why so many bookstores carry Grammar in Use and Vocabulary in Use but not Pronunciation in Use, since it's just as good or better. And I would consider pronunciation more important than grammar or vocabulary. There's a lot of fun included with the instruction. Try this: "Where are the pears?" "Bears?!!! Did you say bears?" "No, pears. You know, fruit!" "Oh, I see. Pears with a P! They're in the pack." "What? In the back of the truck?" "No, in the pack. You know, with a P" "Oh, I see. Pack with a P! Would you like one?" "No, I'll have a peach, please." "A beach?" Or this: "There was a young waiter named Dwight, Who didn't like being polite. If you asked him for food, He was terrible rude, and invited you out for a fight.""
