"When I was 15, I bought this book and began reading it (this was in 1985-1986) when the book had been out. It transformed me and gave me a life-long love of cyberpunk fiction. Of course, this was before we called it that. Neuromancer will transport you to a dystopian future where the megacorporations have replaced the governments and the virtual reality consensual hallucination that is the Matrix (nothing to do with the movie, this one makes sense) is a place where Console Cowboys raid banks and steal data - the real currency. Neuromancer has many subtle twists to the plot. Just when you think you have it nailed down, it changes on you and you have to re-evaluate your preconceptions. If you like cyberpunk, or wonder what the "old craze" was ever about, Neuromancer is THE book to start with. William Gibson is a visionary and was able to see things that we have now. Read it and you;ll see what I mean. No global network existed in 1985 (well it did, but that's splitting hairs), cyberwear is still a long ways off, but we now have prostetics almost as good as the real thing. THIS book is where settings like Shadowrun came from. I can't recommend it enough. Gibson's writing isn't slow or drawn out, his visuals instantly transport you to the iconic areas he describes - you can almost smell the harbor in Chiba, feel Case's SAS nausea, and more. Just read it!"
