"I enjoy erotica and heard so much about this book that I had to give it a shot, but I'm five chapters in and just can't take it anymore. This has to be the most appallingly atrocious writing I've ever seen in a major release. The pseudonymous British author sets the action (such as it is) in Washington State... for no reason than that her knowledge of America apparently consists of what she read in "Twilight"... but the entire first-person narrative is filled with Britishisms. How many American college students do you know who talk about "prams," "ringing" someone on the phone, or choosing a "smart rucksack" to take "on holiday"? And the author's geography sounds like she put together a jigsaw puzzle of the Pacific Northwest while drunk and ended up with several pieces in the wrong place. "

"I was just looking at pictures when I noticed the mask on the cover of this book. Turns out it's about vampires and is actually part of a series. The protagonist is traveling to find out the origin of her newfound powers and only finding more questions. The series is more geared to the YA fiction crowd as older readers may find the writing a bit basic and plots too predictable. "

"Well, this is a book that has a mask on the cover. So it does solve the topic's goal. I don't know this book and I've never heard of the author, but it does have pretty good review scores on Amazon (3.9 out 5 stars). "

"Mike Reeves called City of Masks a "magicless fantasy." I wondered what that could be until I read the book. Having done so, I can say that it isn't a fantasy (there are no fantasy elements in the story), but it is a wonderful, tightly-crafted tale with richly-developed characters and an intricate plot in a highly imaginative setting. I believe the reason Reeves calls it a fantasy is because it takes place in an alternate world, but of course that isn't a defining characteristic of fantasy; many fantasies don't take place in alternate worlds, but all fantasies include fantastic elements, which City of Masks does not. But enough on categories and genres"

"The Phantom of the Opera is one of the best known novels and plays, and classically involves a mask as a key plot device and characteristic of the main character, the phantom. This version does in fact feature the mask on the cover, which makes it the perfect fit for my novel search."

"Pantomime is a beautifully written story about Micah, an acrobat apprentice in the circus, who is trying to find his way in the world but seems to be carrying a secret that is forcing him to hide his true emotions. From the mysterious ancient artifacts that sometimes seem to contain an elusive magical quality to the modern-day problems of society trying to force conformity upon the people, it contains the tried and true aspects of civilization. War, peace, love, magic, darkness, betrayal, confusion, hope and that everlasting question we all search for: who are we really and how do we know who we can trust with that truth. With everyone in the circus carrying around a secret, it is a story that touched me deeply with its combination of steampunk, Sci Fi and Fantasy genres. Who is really who and what those secrets reveal is something that I was not expecting, but was rewarding and refreshing in the end. "
