"Kindred was a riveting read. It’s described as sci-fi, but the time travel is really just a device used to examine issues of slavery and race from modern and historical perspectives simultaneously. The focus is much more on the characters and issues of race. I highly recommend this book."

"The color purple is a classic, especially the movie. Reading the book is a good idea, and I would suggest it if you haven't yet, or haven't seen the movie especially."

"The Skin I'm In is a great book with a black character as the lead. It's a great story about embracing how you look and not feeling bad about yourself. I would recommend it who feels like they look different. It's inspiring."

"Anytime I see that a book has been adapted to a movie, I make a conscious effort to read the source material before seeing the movie. This is the case for 12 Years a Slave, the book was much more gruesome and realistic than the movie. If you did watch the movie and enjoyed it, you should read the book to get more personal insights into how life was for slaves after the Civil War. "

"Keisha Ervin has developed a following among people who read "urban fiction," but perhaps she's writing faster than she can come up with ideas. A pivotal part of the story is identical to scenes in the Sex and the City series, song lyrics are quoted but not credited, and characters are clearly based on prominent celebrities. Ervin is capable of better than this; it;s a disappointment to see what she does in this book."

"I gave this book a chance based on the recommendation based on my request for a black leading character. While there was nothing inherently problematic with the novel's readability or African American presence, I didn't feel that a romantic thriller was an appropriate genre for my grandfather. I ordered a copy for each of us, and I certainly learned my lesson!"

"Great book solution. I sounds like a good book to read and it goes with the topic. The only thing I don't like is when they suggest the second book of the series. I would suggest the first book of the series first because you would be lost if you started with the second"

"Kenyatta's Last Hit is the final in the installment by Donald Goines. It is the best of the four books. Kenyatta has relocated from Detroit to California after making his escape from the Nevada desert in the plane he and the crew hijacked. He has re established an underground Black militant group in L.A. after almost all of his Detroit people were killed. The same detectives from the previous books are on his trail. Very good book to read."
