WHAT'S THE MEANING?

A collectible card game (CCG) is a kind of strategy game that consists of designed sets of playing cards. The cards used in these games usually consist of artwork or images that depict fantasy, horror or other themes. These cards also contain text which is used as part of the game's strategy.

DID YOU KNOW?

The existence of collectible card games started around 1993. It was branded as a new kind of card game. What differentiated it from earlier card games was that a player needed to buy cards separately. Players first needed to buy starter decks and then buy booster packs to expand their selections. Magic: The Gathering is considered the first collectible card game. Many game creators have tried to emulate its success and it served as the prototype for future CCGs. During the 2000s, the CCG market has continued to expand. It took a turn in the years 2001 and 2002 as the CCG trend was shifting towards existing franchises. Cartoons, movies, television, and books influenced the creation of CCG games. Examples are Harry Potter, LOTR and Yu-Gi-Oh!, to name a few. Collectible Card Games have also adapted with technology as it has shifted to online gaming such as browser TCGs, also known as browser trading card games. Recent years have also seen the rise of CCG games on Android like Naruto card game apps and other platforms, as well as its presence in online browser games. The trend of CCG seems to be riding with the times and its end is nowhere to be seen.
