DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that CGI was seen as an inferior alternative to practical effects back then? Every new technology introduced to the world of film is almost guaranteed to bring controversy. These new elements incorporated can be totally hated by fans and what not. However, computer-generated imagery seems to have been the most divisive thing introduced in film. When it was first used with 1973's Westworld, it already garnered many critics. With the best talents and technology, people can do stunning things with CGI. However, many films and TV shows have been cited to have executed the use of this technology poorly. It was not until 1991 when Pixar began working with Disney to create a full "computer-generated animated movie."
This movie was "Toy Story". Its release in 1995 marked as the start of a revolution in animation and film in general. The movie became the highest grossing film of 1995, making $192 million in the US alone. Worldwide, it did generate $362 million in total. The era of "Toy Story" started the time when the world really saw CGI in movies as an effective medium for entertainment. Today, this technology has flourished and is strong as ever. CGI movies are a staple not only in Hollywood but all over the world. This technology is mostly incorporated with the best anime to create visually-appealing films. How computer-generated imagery has polarized filmgoers is beyond reason. However, its impact in film is unquestionable and we are all starting to see why.
