It broke records in 2013 when it became the fastest selling console, with 1 million units sold just on the day of its release. In contrast, the top competitor for the PS4, the Xbox One, is way behind in terms of sales. In January 2016, when PS4 sales were announced to be at 35.9 million units, the Xbox One has sold only around 19 million units. Since then, Microsoft has stopped disclosing figures about approximately how many units of the Xbox One has been sold. Microsoft has said that it uses user engagement as its key metric for success, rather than the total number of units sold worldwide.

The PlayStation4 has been universally acclaimed and has received overwhelmingly positive reviews. Considering that the console spent five years in development, it was a job well done for Sony.
