Chick flick is a slang term that is used to refer to the film genre that generally appeals more to younger female audiences. The themes for these types of movies generally deal with love and romance. The term is used in reference to films that contain personal drama, emotion, or themes dealing with relationships. Chick flicks also often release en masse (in groups) and usually around romantic holidays like Valentine's Day. The term has been called out as being derogatory in the way that it's being utilized. There's denying though that it has been a highly effective marketing tool in the film industry. Chick flicks usually have a female protagonist in them. These women are often portrayed as sassy and noble victims or klutzy 20-somethings.
The term chick flick was supposedly coined by someone named Brian Callaghan of Montreal, Canada in the mid-1970s. Despite this, some have considered Breakfast at Tiffany's, a film that came out in the 1960s, to be one of the best examples of the genre. These types of movies, in general, are held in popular culture as very formulaic. This is due to the common romantic or dating-based storylines and the prevalent thematic use of the color pink. Chick flicks were really popular during the 1980s but also during the 2000s, which is what we're focusing on today. If you've never seen a chick flick from that era before, you should try watching one. To get you started, check out some of the best chick flicks of the 2000s in our list below.
