"The Iliad and the Odyssey seems pretty daunting in the beginning. Once you get to know the characters, the story flows nicely."

"Approaching War and Peace feels like a monumental task. Sitting down and reading it is not for the faint of heart. The story is engrossing and will consume you. It took me about four weeks to finish it because it's not the kind of book that one can read straight through. One puts it down to think about it, coming back after one has digested what has one read. Set against the backdrop of Napoleonic Europe, the story follows three main Russian families as they navigate the early years of the nineteenth century. Plot? Is there one? Perhaps. Perhaps not. The background history of the Napoleon Wars are what set in motion a lot of the action, especially for the male protagonists who fight in the wars. For the females it seems that love and falling in love and out of love and the passage to adulthood are what drives their stories. Our main protagonist is Pierre Bezukhov, a mirror for Tolstoy himself. The ideas Bezukhov spouts are usually the ideas Tolstoy believes in and wants you to believe in too. Pierre is the illegitimate son of a rich aristocrat. "

    #5Alice's Adventures In Wonderland

    Alice's Adventures In Wonderland
Alice's Adventures In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll is a book where wordplay, parody, and logical and philosophical puzzles are everywhere. For all the surface playfulness, there is meaning in every page.

"Once again they have put reviews of a variety of Alice editions together without any regard to the volume in question. This is not a pop-up, not a coloring book, does not lack illustrations, is not small, and is not specifically intended for young children. This is an annotated edition meant to inform and entertain older readers with a variety of illustrations including the black and white originals. For those who wish to know the tale behind the jokes and puzzles a must. Other readers may wish a more streamlined edition or a modern 'retelling' with colored illustrations by contemporary artists. I'm sure they'll find a review for all versions in this hodgepodge."

"Another GORGEOUS (and affordable!) antique-book reproduction from Calla Editions by Dover-- it's lusciously illustrated with both pen and ink drawings and full-page colored plates. The other review on here, titled "disappointing" (which gives it 3 stars) is meant for a different edition--one from 2010-- 7 years before this edition was printed! In-depth details: light blue, clothbound covers; the pictoral pastedown on the front cover is black, blue and ivory; navy blue ink stampings on front cover and spine; illustrated endpapers; blank back cover. A puzzling but impressive detail is that every single page of text is printed on the same stiff, high-gloss paper typically reserved for color-plates. This is strange but great as it will hold up better over time, will resist yellowing or staining, and is acid free. Pretty cool."

"Dante was minor royalty but lived a sad life. He depended a lot on the kindness of strangers as he wondered through the streets of Italy. Perhaps that is how he came to write The Divine Comedy giving us our best description of Hell, Purgatory and Paradise that we will never see. A lot of soul and searching went into this book and perhaps writing it helped to keep the author sane. What privilege to be granted such insight."
