Co-operative gameplay or Co-Op gameplay is a form of gaming where two players or a group of players team up to complete objectives or beat one or more artificially intelligent (AI) opponents to win the game. It is different from the multi-player type of gameplay since that game pit players against other players.
Did you know that the Left 4 Dead franchise, one of the best selling survival horror video games in the last 10 years, is credited for breathing life back to the co-operative video game genre? The first Left 4 Dead game was released by Valve in November 2008 and quickly became not only a well-appreciated game by critics, it also became a commercial hit. It received an average of 89% score from GameRankings and Metacritic, and was scored 9/10 by Edge, Eurogamer, and IGN, which also named L4D as the Best Multiplayer Game of the Year despite the rise of war-based shooter games and multiplayer online battle arena games. Less than a year after the release, it already had 2.5 million copies sold, prompting the release of the sequel, Left 4 Dead 2. When it was released for the Xbox 360, the copies did not last on the shelves as it was reported that three million copies of the game were sold within two years of the release. On August 11, 2011, game reviewer Giant Bomb said the franchise has sold 11 million copies.
