What are the best comedy movies?

A
Caleb Brein

The term comedy has existed since the time of Greeks and Romans. During those times though, the use of the word was confined to describe stage plays with happy endings. As time progressed, it became more associated with any sort of performance that is intended to cause laughter. 20th-century theater and art brought about comedy that challenges logic and reasoning to induce laughter. There is something in the illogical and absurd that had a humorous effect on people. It eventually gave rise to a profession with the sole purpose of providing joy and laughter (read: comedians). The advent of television and radio provide more platforms for these comedians to reach a broader audience. Some of the most notable comedians early on were Chalie Chaplin and his silent film antics. Another was Rowan Atkinsons and his portrayal of the goofy and quirky, Mr. Bean. Comedy is an ever-evolving concept and art form.

For better or worse, modern comedy has become an exercise in self-deprecating humor, back-hand banter, and plenty of cussing. Society, as a whole, has changed from the much simpler times of old. Expectedly, it has also affected our perspective and what we find funny nowadays. That is not to say that slapstick humor is no longer funny. It just means that there are more ways to make people laugh and that's a good thing. With streaming services being so ubiquitous, you can literally watch a movie with a few clicks. If you're in need of a good laugh, have a look at our list of the best comedy movies below as asked by Caleb Brein and laugh until your sides hurt.

"I'm not particularly fond of romantic comedies or movies in general but this movie isn't bad. It's comical, light-hearted and of course romantic. I watched it because I liked the actors in the movie. They all do well with comedy so I was sure they would do just as good in this movie. I was surprised at the length of the movie given that it is a romantic comedy but you don't notice it as the storyline is entertaining. Great movie overall."

"While E.T. is clearly a classic I found that it just doesn't stand the test of time where I was concerned. I enjoyed the movie when it was originally released in 1982 but as an adult had a hard time getting into it and frankly found it rather stupid. In addition, it's rather slow paced meaning the younger set of today might be bored by it. Still obviously a great movie, just keep your expectations tempered."

"In terms of the Blu-Ray, the transfer of these movies was impressive. The quality is crystal clear, which was something that I was not expecting. I do wish they were packaged normally, they are packed in on one of another instead of separate cases for each. I feel like this might be a cost saving measure on their end, but it is a huge hassle. The movies are of course, a great classic."

Always great fun to watch no matter the time of year assuming you ignore some of the inconsistencies that are strewn throughout. You also may want to check out the sequel but avoid the third one altogether!"

The humor is just something all ages can appreciate. I've watched Shrek (and the sequels) many times, and it's actually one of my favorite animated movies. Go watch it!"

Overall it does pack some good actors, decent laughs, and some interesting cameos. If you are in a true search for great comedy movies, then seek out Mel Brooks, Bill Murray, or even Charlie Chaplin."

I don't like Christmas, I told them so, I just wanted to be left alone to read in my room, but they demanded I sit down and watch this consumerism addled mess of a film. Santa Claus isn't real, no matter what Macy's you happen to be at, and parents should stop peddling this obnoxious lie."
