The term comedy has existed since the time of Greeks and Romans. During those times though, the use of the word was confined to describe stage plays with happy endings. As time progressed, it became more associated with any sort of performance that is intended to cause laughter. 20th-century theater and art brought about comedy that challenges logic and reasoning to induce laughter. There is something in the illogical and absurd that had a humorous effect on people. It eventually gave rise to a profession with the sole purpose of providing joy and laughter (read: comedians). The advent of television and radio provide more platforms for these comedians to reach a broader audience. Some of the most notable comedians early on were Chalie Chaplin and his silent film antics. Another was Rowan Atkinsons and his portrayal of the goofy and quirky, Mr. Bean. Comedy is an ever-evolving concept and art form.
For better or worse, modern comedy has become an exercise in self-deprecating humor, back-hand banter, and plenty of cussing. Society, as a whole, has changed from the much simpler times of old. Expectedly, it has also affected our perspective and what we find funny nowadays. That is not to say that slapstick humor is no longer funny. It just means that there are more ways to make people laugh and that's a good thing. With streaming services being so ubiquitous, you can literally watch a movie with a few clicks. If you're in need of a good laugh, have a look at our list of the best comedy movies below as asked by Caleb Brein and laugh until your sides hurt.
