"This was an interesting read not really a mystery more of a fantasy story about witches. However, it does deal with a mystery that the witch needs to solve. Clever story if you like witchcraft and mysteries. Many interesting characters add to the story and this seems to be part of a series. I may pick up the next book as it was a quick read on the airplane and passed the time."

"I love the Amish series and I was extremely excited about an Amish murder type mystery. The problem that I have with this story is that while the writing is good the portrayed nature of the Amish wives daily life. It is not all baking and sunny windowsills, chatting with the English and enjoying each others company. A good book but the idealization of the Amish to mythical proportions is hard to reconcile."

If that’s what you’re looking for, this is the book for you. Little on the story: it’s the first novel out of 20 that feature Harry Bosch, the main character written by this author. It involves him solving a mystery about a murder of an old friend, making the book a thriller-noir-mystery that’s really a very entertaining combination. Nothing world-shaking, but it’s a great popcorn book for a rainy day. "

This book has shades of similarity akin to Sherlock Holmes. I found myself trying to figure out the clues along with our detective. It's an easy read and has a nice pulp and noir kind of feel as you read it and I love that. My imagination really ran wild with nostalgia as I made my way through this book. Right now I'm looking for more books from Raymond Chandler because I found that I really like his writing style and the way he paints these scenes in my head as I'm reading through."
